Poetry that tickles the imagination

Words are like people. They are great on their own and sometimes better with their friends. The word GREAT is a great word standing there saying look at me - i am GREAT. But sometimes great is not so great, sometimes great wants to join AMAZING and BIG and FAT so that it can say that something was A GREAT BIG FAT AMAZING Parrot. So the parrot is no longer just a word it is now a great big fat amazing parrot - how brilliant is that.

There are words that sit, like SPLODGE and words that dance like SKIP or BOING, and sometimes words like to dance together like Words are like people. There are words that sit, like SPLODGE and words that dance like SKIP or BOING, and sometimes words like to dance together like

the rattling tram ran and ran and the man in the can began to bang the clanging changalanglang to wake the dark & drowsy town.

Sometimes words have twins or soundalikes; words like brain and chain and rain and gain.

Sometimes words have opposite’s like plop and rattle, slumber and thunderstorm, bong and ping.

Sometimes words wrestle and sometimes they skip and sometimes they slide and sometimes they perform great ballets.

And when they do all these things, they become more than just words - they become poetry.

So see them dance and jump and slide and then make some poetry of your own.

Enjoy.

I don't like

I don’t like marmite

I don’t like cheese

I don’t like having to say thankyou and please

I don’t like homework and I don’t like school

I don’t like the sea or the swimming pool

I don’t like my sister or even my brother

I don’t like the way they look at each other

I don’t like vegetables and I don’t like fish

Or anything served in mum’s favourite dish

I don’t like walking

I don’t like sport

I don’t like chicken and I don’t like pork

I don’t like the music that dad plays in the car

I don’t like Gran’s home made jam that she put in a jar

I don’t like showers and I don’t like baths

I don’t like the way my teacher laughs

I don’t like my trainers

They’re not the right brand

I don’t like old ladies who want me to stand

So they can sit down on the bus or the train

I don’t like snow and I don’t like rain

I don’t like bedtime and I don't like mornings

I dont like threats and I don't like warnings

But I do like telly and chocolate and chips

burgers and pizzas and licking my lips

playing games on computers and making a mess

and complaining and shouting when i’m in distress

by being made to do things that I don’t want to do

by mothers and brothers and fathers and you

I am happy complaining

I am happy, I’m fine

I am happy if i get my own way all the time

so if you also want to be happier too

so just let me do what i just want to do.

to anger Yolanda and cause her to cry

Zachary, Zebedee, Zoro and Zed

a name is a name is a name is a name

it’s good to be different and not all the same

so if your name is unusual then hooray to you

and all those who make fun of it

- let them eat poo!
